Television Digest with Consumer Electronics, Jan 5, 1998

San Jose-based TeleCruz said TC7XX chip family combines graphics controller, modem, on-screen display and MIPS-based (millions of instructions per sec.) 70 MHz processor on single chip.

Pres.-CEO Kris Narayan said total bill of materials, including chip, DRAM, ROM and software, for basic functions such as EPG and overlaid graphics from Wink Communications (TVD Dec 1 p17), will be in $15 range. Materials for more advanced functions including e-mail and Web browsing will be in $20 range.

Narayan said company is talking with TV and set-top box manufacturers and hopes chips will be in products by Christmas 1998. "It's fairly versatile," he said. "It interfaces with the VBI [Vertical Blanking Interval] and telephone modems." Privately held TeleCruz said chips will be manufactured by unnamed OEM in Far East.
