Tops Appliance City said sales for 4th quarter ending Dec. 30 declined 16% to $75.7 million from $90.2 million in same period year earlier. Same-store sales fell 1.6%. Sales for year were $292.9 million, off 7% front $316.6 million in 1996. Same-store sales for year were off 3.6% compared with 26.4% plunge from 1995 to 1996.

Despite sales decline, CFD Thomas Zambelli said company expects to report profit for quarter and fiscal year. Good Guys said sales for first quarter ending Dec. 31 inched up 11% to $290.3 million. Cal.-based chain said same-store sales rose 1%.
