NPD: Takeout in Canada beats U.S. growth rate

Nation's Restaurant News, March 11, 2002

TORONTO -- The number of takeout meals served by restaurants in Canada increased at more than twice the rate of takeout in the United States during the last seven years, according to The NPD Group, a Port Washington, N.Y.-based marketing research firm.

Canadian takeout from 1994 to 2001 was up 34 percent, while meals eaten in restaurants increased only 2 percent. Takeout meals in the United States over the same period increased 15 percent, while the number of eat-in meals rose 3 percent.

NPD Canada research found that 24- to 35-year-olds are spending 15 percent more than other age groups when they eat out. They also eat out more often -- with those visits rising 19 percent vs. the average increase of 10 percent for other age groups.
