And while efforts to improve interior atmospheres may have been spurred in part by fast-casual players, many quick-service chains contend their major competitors remain the peers they always have battled.

"Although the fast-casual establishments and other sandwich chains are our competitors, we really look toward the McDonald's, Burger Kings, KFCs and Taco Bells of the world as our main competition," Subway's Winograd says.
