Los ANGELES -- Concession workers at Staples Center here approved a 4.5-year contract with Ogden Entertainment that includes annual pay raises, family health insurance, vacation time, paid holidays, a pension plan and a legal-services plan.

The contract covering 450 workers at the arena was approved April 28 by a vote of about 65-0. The facility will be the venue for the Democratic Convention in August.

The Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union, which represents the concession workers and Staples Center concessionaire Ogden, had been battling since the facility opened last September. Under the contract concession-stand attendants will see their hourly wages increase from an average of $8.76 to $10.55 immediately, with annual hikes that boost wages to $12.50 an hour by March 1, 2004.
