SAN FRANCISCO -- Mary Abott Hess recently was elected chairman of the board of The American Institute of Wine and Food. Hess is president of the food consulting company Hess & Hunt Inc. and is a former president of the 70,000-member American Dietetic Association. She also was founding chairman of the Food & Culinary Professionals Dietetic Practice Group. She has a master's degree in dietetics and has studied at La Varenne Cooking School in Paris and the French Pastry School in Chicago. She also earned a gold medallion from the German Wine Academy.
Hess also serves on the boards of McCormick Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, Les Dames d'Escoffier-Chicago and Food & Culinary Professionals.

The 20-year-old AIWF is a nonprofit educational organization founded on the premise, according to the institute, "that gastronomy is essential to quality of life." It has more than 7,000 members in more than 30 chapters in the United States and France.
