Cal Poly Pomona hospitality school expands to college designation

Nation's Restaurant News, June 23, 2008

POMONA, CALIF. -- The Collins School of Hospitality Management at the California State Polytechnic University campus here will become the Collins College of Hospitality Management July 1.

The designation will make Cal Poly Pomona the first branch of the CSU system with a hospitality management college and one of only six such colleges nationwide.

Founded in 1973, the hospitality management program is the first and largest four-year hospitality degree program in the state and is consistently ranked among the nation's premier hospitality management programs.

More than 850 students currently are enrolled in the Collins program, which has close alliances with several major restaurant and hospitality chains based in Southern California, including CKE Restaurants, whose late founder Carl Karcher was a leading benefactor. The soon-to-be-college was named after principal initial benefactor James Collins, the former owner of the Sizzler chain and one of Harland Sanders' first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisees.
