Senate nixes plan to raise minimum wage to $7.25

Nation's Restaurant News, July 3, 2006

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate rejected a proposal by Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., to raise the federal minimum wage by 41 percent over the next two years to $7.25 an hour.

Senators voted down the amendment to S.2766 by a vote of 52 to 46, eight votes short of the 60 required to pass. Kennedy argued that the minimum wage had not been increased since 1997, when it rose to $5.15.

If Democrats win enough seats in the November election to gain control of the Senate, Kennedy said, a new minimum-wage bill would be one of the first pieces of legislation introduced.
