Burger King seeks greater brand reach with branded snacks

Nation's Restaurant News, August 13, 2007

MIAMI -- Burger King Corp. has signed a license agreement with Phoenix-based snack-food manufacturer The Inventure Group to develop a line of branded trans-fat-free snacks for the chain.

Two snack chip flavors will be introduced: Ketchup & Fries and a yet-to-be-named flame-broiled flavor. The snacks will be available in vending machines, on airlines and in convenience, drug and grocery stores beginning in November.

The snack line will enable Burger King to expand its brand reach beyond its 11,200-plus restaurants, said Russ Klein, president of global marketing, strategy and innovation for Burger King Corp.

Single serving sizes of 1 ounce and 1.75 ounces will be featured in vending machines and on airlines; 2.5- or 3-ounce sizes will be available in convenience stores, and 5.5-ounce bags will be sold in grocery stores.

Burger King Corp. also plans to test-market a 1-ounce, 100-calorie bag in its restaurants as an alternative to French fries.
