Bob Evans' same-store sales flatten in 1st Q

Nation's Restaurant News, Sept 2, 2002

COLUMBUS, OHIO--Sausage maker Bob Evans Farms Inc. said total sales of its 495-unit Bob Evans Restaurants division had risen 5.7 percent, to $234 million, in the first quarter ended July 26. However, same-store sales rose only 0.6 percent.

The family-dining chain said it would focus on cost control to improve results, but "weaker-than-expected national or regional economic conditions" could hinder attainment of sales growth targets previously stated for 2003. The chain said that despite sluggish sales it would open about 30 new units during the year.

The chain's parent company reported net earnings of $20.6 million for the first quarter, a 37-percent increase over the year-ago quarterly profit of $15 million.
