Mom of autistic son sets Krispy Kreme camp-out record

Nation's Restaurant News, Sept 15, 2003 by Paul King

LANSING, MICH. -- Annie Lewis spent 13 nights sleeping on the street outside a Krispy Kreme unit here, awaiting the store's grand opening and apparently besting the chain's previous camp-out record by one day.

Lewis told The Associated Press that the sacrifice was for a good cause: her 12-year-old autistic son Gregg, who is obsessed with Krispy Kreme.

"A lot of people think I'm nuts for doing this," commented Lewis, who said the wait made her son happy and, she hopes, raised awareness about autism. For her efforts Krispy Kreme allowed her son to cut the ribbon and turn on the chain's signature "hot light" neon sign
