California State Poly students begin fall term with caper

POMONA, CALIF. -- Students at California State Polytechnic University here kicked off the academic year the way they always do -- with hot dogs and bungee jumping.

The 17th annual Hot Dog Caper on the University Quad welcomed the university's 17,000 students back to campus late last month. More than 250 volunteers, including university president Robert H. Suzuki and his wife, passed out hot dogs, vegetarian dogs, chips, sodas and popsicles to the crowd during the noontime event.

Skeeball, a ska/latin/reggae band, entertained the students while they partied.

The co-sponsors of the event were Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Associated Students Inc., Vienna Sausage Co. and Pepsi-Cola, which provided the bungee jumping booth.

"For a campus that has a large percentage of nontraditional students, this was a great opportunity to bring people together as a campus community," Suzuki
