POMONA, CALIF. -- Restaurant veterans from around Southern California gathered at California State Polytechnic University here for the 13th annual Harvest Auction last month.
The fundraising event for the Collins School of Hospitality Management featured silent and live auctions and a banquet prepared by students with the support of such guest chefs as Susan Feniger of Border Grill and Ciudad, Mark Peel of Campanile, and Joyce Goldstein of the former Square One.
Bob Spivak, co-founder and former president and chief executive of Grill Concepts Inc., and his wife, Leslie, were awarded the 2006 Robert Mondavi Wine & Food Award. Bob and Leslie Spivak opened The Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills in 1982, now one of five high-end steakhouses that they run throughout the country. Grill Concepts now also operates 20 more casual Daily Grill restaurants. The company went public in 1995.
