U.S. Foodservice to be sold by Royal Ahold

Nation's Restaurant News, Dec 4, 2006

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS -- Royal Ahold, based here, said it would exit the foodservice business by divesting U.S. Foodservice of Columbia, Md. A statement from the parent company said: "U.S. Foodservice has the potential to further improve its performance, but we see limited near-term synergies between it and retail operations.

Therefore, we have decided to focus our resources and expertise wholly on the future growth of our retail businesses." Ahold acquired the business in 2003. U.S. private-equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice and the South African investment firm Bidvest are said to be potential suitors.
