Ex-Burger King worker to get $4M burn settlement

Nation's Restaurant News, Feb 14, 2005

WEST SENECA, N.Y. -- A former Burger King employee who was burned severely when a grease filter exploded at a BK restaurant here agreed to a $4 million settlement in her lawsuit against the Miami-based franchisor and two other companies.

Brittany Krollman, who now is 24, in 1997 suffered burns, five surgeries and permanent scars after a grease machine exploded, spraying her with 350degree oil while she was working in the kitchen, according to her Buffalo, N.Y., attorney, Craig Watson. He said the grease filter was defective, and the restaurant lacked proper training and operating procedures for the device, which exploded after an aerosol canister fell into the machine.

The settlement was to be paid within 90 days by Burger King Corp.; Resser Management Services, a BK franchisee operating the former restaurant; and FAST Inc., the Stratford, Conn.-based filter manufacturer. Arbitration would determine each company's share of the settlement, Watson said.

Burger King declined to comment.
