Friendly's to revamp, complies with Disability Act

Nation's Restaurant News, May 26, 1997

WILBRAHAM, Mass. -- Following a year-long investigation by the Department of Justice, family operator Friendly's Ice Cream Corp. agreed to enhance the facilities at its 707 restaurants to bring them in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Last year, the DOJ told Friendly's that the chain had opportunities' to bring restrooms, entranceways and dining rooms into stricter ADA compliance.

A Friendly's spokewoman termed the investigation a "collaborative" effort and said the company's position was that Friendly's facilities had always been in ADA compliance. She also declined to place a dollar amount on the systemwide refurbishing, saying each restaurant must be examined "on an individual basis."
