Restaurateurs sing sad tune about Branson; overdevelopment sparks competition

Nation's Restaurant News, June 12, 1995 by Carolyn Walkup

Still more restaurants and dinner theaters are scheduled to open in Branson this summer. Those under construction now include Dixie Stampede, another Silver Dollar City amusement, this one with Dolly Parton, 1,000 seats; Mesquite Charlie's, an independent steak house with 1,200 seats near the Charley Pride Theatre; and Houston-based Landry's Seafood Restaurant, with 250 seats on Country Music Boulevard.

Aware of the risks involved in operating in Branson, Tilman Fertitta, Landry's president, said: "It's a real funny market. A lot of restaurants do not do well there."

Nevertheless, Fertitta expects that Landry's will succeed where others are struggling because of its seafood niche, a premier location and "a lot of curb appeal."

The Ozark Marketing Council has set a goal of attracting 10 million tourists by 2000. lts biggest growth season has been in November and December when the whole town celebrates Ozark Mountain Christmas.
