CHARLESTON, S.C. - By donating $75,000 in scholarships and sponsoring co-ops for high-ranking students, Harris Teeter Inc., a regional supermarket chain located in five Southeastern states, is making its mark on Johnson & Wales University.

Scholarships of $7,500 will be given to two students from the six Johnson & Wales campuses each year for the next five years. Recipients of the scholarships must demonstrate at least a 3.5 grade point average, have outstanding recommendations from the faculty and be involved in extracurricular activities.

Harris Teeter Inc. gives culinary-arts students further opportunities with trimester-long co-ops at the headquarters here. Co-ops supplement a student's classroom education with handson experience in the job market before they graduate.

Students completing coops with Harris Teeter Inc. gain insight into the grocery store foodservice segment, the fastest-growing segment in the industry today, according to Todd Rymer, assistant director of culinary education.
