McDonald's firms up Ty toy partnership

Nation's Restaurant News, Jan 13, 1997

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Just months after linking up with toy giant Fisher Price, McDonald's Corp. has recruited another toy partner, Ty Inc., in an exclusive deal.

Ty recently signed into an exclusive licensing agreement with the Golden Arches. The Chicago area toymaker makes Beanie Babies, a line of hand-held, plush beanbag animals that were first introduced in 1994 but took off this year and became one of the Top 10 selling gifts during the season.

The toys have been sold in such nontraditional venues as car washes, but such distribution is not likely to continue unless the agreement calls only for category exclusivity. McDonald's was unavailable to comment further about the deal.
