Nation's Restaurant News, August 21, 1995

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. - Dean Foods Co., a diversified food processor and distributor based here, acquired Watsonville, Calif.-based Norcal Crosetti Foods for an undisclosed amount.

A frozen vegetable processor, Norcal has a product line consisting of broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots and Brussels sprouts.

Norcal, which has processing plants in Watsonville and Salinas, Calif., reported annual sales of about $45 million last year.

The integration of Norcal's production with our existing facilities in Watsonville should provide efficiencies that will strengthen our position," Howard Dean, Dean Foods' chairman, said in a statement.

Dean entered the processed-vegetable business in 1986 with the purchase of the Larsen Co.

Since that time the company has made six additional processed-vegetable acquisitions, including Birds Eye, from Kraft/General Foods in 1993.

Dean currently operates 19 vegetable-processing plants in seven states here and in Mexico.
