Pizza tops poll on delivery food

LINCOLN, Neb.--By an overwhelming 11-to-1 margin, pizza reigns supreme as the top choice of menu items traditionally offered for home or workplace delivery.

According to results from the July Nation's Restaurant News SRI Poll, 69 percent of those who have ordered a meal from a restaurant and had it delivered to their home or office chose pizza.

The NRN/SRI Poll, conducted by the Lincoln, Neb.-based SRI Research Inc., asked 1,002 consumers two questions concerning meal delivery.

First consumers were asked, "When was the last time you ate a meal that was prepared at a restaurant and delivered to your home or office?"

Of the people surveyed, 726 said they had eaten a home or office-delivered meal prepared in a restaurant within the past year. Those who indicated they had eaten ordered a delivered meal were then then asked, "What type of meal was it?"

Chinese food finished second behind pizza with 6 percent of all responses, while 3 percent replied they had or dered either hot or cold sandwiches.

Twenty-four percent of those polled said they had a meal delivered within the past week; 15 percent indicated they had done so within the last month.

Thirteen percent of the people surveyed said that it was longer then one year since they had a home or workplace delivered meal, and a surprising 28 percent said they have never ordered a home or work-delivered meal prepared by a restaurant.
