MINNEAPOLIS - Carlson Cos. Inc. named Curtis Nelson President and chief executive of Carlson Hospitality Worldwide, replacing John Norlander, who plans to retire from the diversified hotel-and-restaurant operator effective Jan. 1, 1997, the company said.

Nelson joined the company in 1989 and most recently had been executive vice president and chief operating officer at Carlson Hospitality Worldwide, which includes 1,100 hotel, restaurant and cruise ship locations operating under the Radisson, Country Inns &, Suites, T.G.I. Friday's, Italianni's, Country Kitchen and other brands.

Nelson is credited with spearheading Carlson's recent acquisition of the Regent luxury-hotel brand.

Norlander, a 21-year veteran of the company, will serve as a consultant after his retirement, the company said.

In addition to Carlson Hospitality, privately held Carlson Cos. also includes travel-agency and marketing services businesses.
