Work as a team

Shooting Industry, Sept, 2005 by Bill Dunn

Other key areas covered during the Partnership for Progress seminars are how to avoid smash and grab thefts, the importance of frequent and accurate inventories, security of firearms and knowing the requirements of being a gun dealer. Officials from the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) are also on hand at the seminars

"There's so much to gain at the seminars," said John Badowski, NAFR's managing director. "It gives everyone a much better and deeper understanding of what's required of them as an FFL."

Badowski, a longtime ATF compliance manager for a national retail chain, has helped present more than 40 of the seminars nationwide.

For dealers, the ATF/NAFR partnership is not only providing a unique and successful training program, but also is helping to create a much-needed link between retailers, the government and the firearms industry.

"It's really built a relationship between our company, NSSF and ATF, and opened the door to being able to work as a team," Grow said.

"When it comes to the sale of firearms, you cannot be detailed enough in providing training," said John Blevins, director of ATF compliance for Wal-Mart.

For those not able to attend the seminars or for those wanting the information sooner, the ATF and NAFR provide educational kits through the Don't Lie for the Other Guy program.

The free kits--obtained by contacting the NSSF--include a video, posters, counter maps and cards and a CD. The CD may be used for employee training and education on how to identify and detect straw purchasers.

Upcoming Partnership for Progress seminars are regularly posted on the NAFR Web site, www.nafr.org. They also are advertised through mailings sent to all FFLs in the area of the upcoming event and in NSSF's electronic newsletter, "Bullet Points."

Related seminars also will be offered at the SHOT Show, Feb. 9-12, 2006, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, through SHOT Show University.
