Medical Laboratory Observer, Dec, 2004
The lab worker's first line of defense against corrosive liquid spills, chemical vapors, and other sources of contamination is personal protective equipment (PPE)--the second skin that keeps the lab technician safe, healthy, and alive. Working in hazardous laboratory environments means an accident or negligence may not only harm but also kill. This array of gloves, lab coats, aprons, and protective eyewear is but a sampling of the most tech-savvy apparel available in today's market for clinical laboratory personnel.
Protective lab coats

Protection Plus lab coats, designed to meet OSHA directives 2.2-44D, are spray resistant to blood and other potentially infectious materials, as well as stain resistant to blood, iodine, betadine, hydrogen peroxide, bleach, and most laboratory stain agents--even after 225 wash cycles. During durability testing, the Protection Plus fabric retained over 96% of its strength. Designed for use in room-temperature environments, the breathable fabric is comparable to coats made of a polyester/cotton blend. Primary applications of Protection Plus coats include clinical laboratories, anatomic pathology, testing laboratories, chemistry, blood banks, and hematology. At a savings of 25% to 35% cost-per-wash over the life of the coat, users can better control garment expenses.

Eyewash system
This easy-to-install chrome-plated brass wash unit attaches to existing faucets for emergencies, yet still allows normal sink use. If, despite all precautions, an employee experiences a splash of corrosive liquid in the eye, Opti Klens Faucet-Mount Eye Wash system is easy to activate when seconds count. Simply pull the one-step "actuator" pin to start eyewash, and release the pin on the eliminator valve to allow water to pass through the faucet.

Masks
Masks protect critical environments from particles and bacteria expressed from the mouth. The Kimberly-Clark Duckbill Facemask design provides a large breathing chamber, which holds the mask away from the face for enhanced breathability and comfort. Its bacterial filtration is greater than 95%. All facemask models offered have bacterial filtration efficiency of at least 92% for particle sizes down to 1.0 [micro]m. Some have clear plastic faceshields to protect the eyes from fluid splash or laser plume, while others can be ordered with an optional plastic film across the nosebridge to prevent eyeglasses from fogging. Masks are generally held to the face with ear loops, string ties, or an elastic band.
