Education and training

Medical Laboratory Observer, March, 2005

Ever-evolving technologies and new medical discoveries demand that laboratory professionals keep abreast with ongoing education and training. Enhancing their clinical knowledge and pursuing professional growth benefits everyone, particularly the patient community, through efficient and up-to-date testing and using the latest techniques and safety protocols.

Phlebotomy training

The Applied Phlebotomy video series consists of three videotapes: "Basic Venipuncture," "Preventing Preanalytical Errors," and "Avoiding Phlebotomy-Related Lawsuits." Features include interviews, case studies, 3D graphic animation, and content that reflects the recently revised CLSI (formerly NCCLS) standards and OSHA regulations. Each tape qualifies for CE credit through ASCLS' P.A.C.E. program. Videos are available individually or as a set. In this series, the viewer will learn the revised CLSI order of draw; how to avoid hemolyzing specimens; how to minimize collector-induced errors that alter results; the most common mistakes that injure patients and bring lawsuits; and much more.

Clinical lab education

The LabUniversity e-learning program gives physicians, medical technologists, and laboratory staff access to convenient laboratory training that will meet certification and licensing requirements. This educational resource can be used anytime, anywhere, via the Internet. The course catalog is divided into three categories: (1) CEexpress is a fast method for obtaining required CE units; (2) Laboratory Science provides a solid core of clinical laboratory courses that enhance medical-testing skills; and (3) Laboratory Testing consists of training courses for clinical laboratory test kits and laboratory instruments from various manufacturers. Each course includes examples drawn from current laboratory practices. Earn both CME and P.A.C.E. CE credits while gaining tangible knowledge that can be immediately applied in the lab.
