Pro-Tec Equipment has added a new lightweight shielding system--called the Flash Shoring System--to its product line. The system was developed by Gas Technology Institute with funding from Operations Technology Development, NFP. It provides a versatile method for accessing, repairing and rehabilitating underground pipe and facilities in congested areas where other utility lines are present. It can be easily transported (with one utility truck) and can be installed by one or two people without heavy equipment. Designed for small excavations, Pro-Tec says the shielding system can be installed in about 20 minutes. The panels are made from lightweight honeycombed aluminum and can be manufactured in varying lengths up to eight feet long to meet OSHA standards. A patent has been issued on the design.
