The American Gas Association has elected a new slate of officers. Laurence M. Downes, chairman and CEO of New Jersey Resources and its principal subsidiary, New Jersey Natural Gas, was elected as chairman of AGA's board of directors for 2005.

AGA's other officers for 2005 are: First Vice Chairman Stephen Ewing, president and COO of DTE Energy Gas (Detroit); Second Vice Chairman James DeGraffenreidt, Jr., chairman and CEO of Washington Gas (Washington, DC); and, Immediate Past Chairman Robert Best, chairman, president and CEO of Atmos Energy Corp. AGA President/CEO David Parker said, "Larry's background in finance gives him tremendous insight into the critical link between financial strength and reliability in the energy industry. He is a positive leader who will devote his chairman's year to understanding what various stakeholders need and expect from local gas utilities, and laying out measurable plans for meeting those expectations."
