Healthcare Financial Management, Dec, 1999

HCFA has announced that effective January 1, 2000, Medicare beneficiaries will pay a $776 deductible for inpatient hospital care, an $8 increase from the 1999 deductible amount. The increase was announced in a notice published in the October 22 Federal Register regarding Medicare premium rates and deductible amounts for calendar year 2000. According to HCFA, the small increase reflects savings mandated by the 1997 Balanced Budget Act.

The Part A daily coinsurance amounts will be $194 for days 61 through 90 of hospitalization during a benefit period, $388 for lifetime reserve days, and $97 for days 21 through l00 of extended care services in a skilled nursing facility. The Part A premium for the uninsured aged and for certain disabled individuals who have exhausted other entitlement has been reduced to $301. The monthly premium rate for Part B coverage is $45.50, which is the same as the 1999 rate, and the monthly Part B actuarial rates will be $91.90 for aged enrollees and $121.10 for disabled enrollees.
