The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on November 14, 2001, that it recovered $1.6 billion in civil fraud payments in FY01, the highest amount ever recorded in a one-year period. Healthcare fraud cases topped the list of annual recoveries once again, totaling more than $1.2 billion. Among the notable healthcare recoveries in FY01 were a $745 million settlement with HCA for numerous alleged fraudulent schemes, $104 million from Quorum Health Care Group for submitting allegedly false cost reports to Medicare, and $103 million from Vencor for alleged false claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE.
