CMS recently informed HFMA that the Medicare psychiatric inpatient prospective payment system (PPS) proposed rule is working its way through the rule-clearance process and could be published in the Federal Register in April or May 2003. The final rule would likely have a January 1, 2004, effective date.

However, this PPS rule is likely to generate significant public response, and recommendations for change could delay its implementation.
