JCAHO to conduct unannounced surveys in 2006 - Policy Watch - the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations - Brief Article

Healthcare Financial Management, June, 2003

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has unveiled plans to begin conducting unannounced accreditation surveys beginning January 2006. The new process, which JCAHO calls "Shared Visions-New Pathways," establishes the expectation that all accredited entities should maintain full compliance with JCAHO standards at all times. The unannounced triennial survey process, approved by JCAHO's Board of Commissioners in March, will be piloted for 100 volunteer organizations during 2004. The process will continue during the following year on a limited basis before the transition to a fully unannounced survey program in 2006. Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, will be the first facility to be surveyed.
