Hoyler receives Morgan Award

Geraldine M. Hoyler, C.S.C., FHFMA, CPA, was recently awarded the 2005 Frederick C. Morgan Achievement Award--the Association's highest individual honor--this June at HFMA's Annual National Institute in Las Vegas. Sister Geraldine is the 47th recipient of this award, which honors contributions to healthcare financial management and HFMA.

Sister Geraldine has contributed an entire career to raising the standards of the healthcare financial management profession. She is the general treasurer of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, an international congregation of women religious of the Roman Catholic Church. Before assuming her position with the congregation in August 2004, Sister Geraldine was the senior vice president of finance and treasury for Catholic Health Initiatives, a national Catholic health organization with almost $8 billion in annual revenue. She played a key leadership role in the formation and success of this major healthcare system.

Sister Geraldine has been an active member of HFMA for more than 30 years and attained fellowship in 1976. Her service includes membership on HFMA's national matrix, the principles and practices board, and the National Board of Directors. On the National Board, she has been Secretary, Treasurer, Chairman-Elect, and Chairman. A member of HFMA's Indiana Pressler Memorial Chapter, she has received the Follmer Bronze, Reeves Silver, and Muncie Gold awards.

Sister Geraldine is the initial CFO and one of the original officers of Holy Cross Health System Corporation, in South Bend, Ind. As executive vice president and CFO, she oversaw policy and practice development in all areas of financial management, information systems, and legal services for a system with annual revenues of $1 billion at that time.

Sister Geraldine also has had a significant role shaping the industry through her activities on various boards. She currently serves on CHRISTUS Health's board of directors and the finance and strategy committee of the board of directors. Previously, she served on the finance committee of the Archdiocesan Finance Council, the board of stewardship trustees for the Catholic Health Initiatives, and board of trustees for the Catholic Health Corporation. She also has served on the finance committee of the board of directors for Incarnate Word Health Services, San Antonio; the board of trustees for Mount Carmel Health, Columbus, Ohio; and the board of trustees for Holy Cross Health Management Services Corporation, McCall, Idaho.
