AETNA DROPS SOME HMOs IN CALIFORNIA - Brief Article

Healthcare Financial Management, August, 2001

Aetna Inc., Hartford, Connecticut, has announced its intention to withdraw its Aetna U.S. Healthcare HMO-based products from 11 counties in California's Central Valley and part of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, affecting 44,000 of Aetna's 1.8 million members in California. Aetna said the reason for the withdrawal is to improve the efficiency of its business operations and provide high-quality, affordable health care to its customers and members.

The changes will become effective for group renewals on or after January 1,2002. The company said it will continue to offer its preferred provider option and indemnity products and group life and disability insurance products to customers in these counties.
