Preserving Healthy Teeth

Prepared Foods, June, 2000

Preservatives commonly found in diet soda, frozen foods, juices and many other foods appear to help prevent cavities. At an annual meeting of the International Association of Dental Research, researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, N.Y., presented findings that demonstrate common preservatives such as benzoates and sorbates appear to enhance the cavity-protecting action of fluoride.

"There may be a more structured way to take advantage of this, such as putting these preservatives into toothpaste," says William Bowen, B.D.S., Ph.D., Welcher Professor of Dentistry.
