Urban "cow" girl

Prepared Foods, July, 1999

Urban "cow" girl. Danish-based dairy giant MD Foods has signed a two-year licensing deal with Cosmopolitan magazine for use of its name on a range of dairy products, including yogurt, fromage frais, and soft cheese. The formulations are low in fat, yet indulgent. The soft cheese, for example, has 2% fat, and the Mediterranean Peach or Midnight Cherry yogurts, with whole fruit pieces, are touted "98.6% fat-free." The products carry a price premium.

According to an MD spokesperson, Cosmopolitan is seen as a "sophisticated and aspirational" brand that is also "universally recognized" among 15-44 year olds. The products are headed for stores in the U.K., but given the global nature of the Cosmopolitan brand, launches in other countries would seem likely.

Mars is entering the fast-growing organic sector in the U.K., using the name of its U.S. subsidiary Seeds of Change. The new organic range comprises four varieties of pasta sauces in jars and three varieties of dry pasta, all endorsed by the U.K.'s Soil Association.
