Consumers are rapidly taking up Western-style habits and this is at its most noticeable in the food and drink sector. It is not just that individuals -- mainly youngsters -- by the millions are turning to Coca-Cola, McDonald's and pizzas. They are, of course, but that is relatively unsurprising.
Of much greater significance are the more fundamental cultural changes making place in eating habits among the broader population. Some examples: the steady growth in consumption of breakfast cereal as it is substituted for more traditional repast; a clear expansion in fresh dairy manufacturing industries in spite of traditional lactose intolerance throughout the region; and a very sharp increase in the availability of convenience foods and packaged groceries.
