Fill 'er up

Prepared Foods, July, 1992

Vegetable oil has many applications, but here's one that may seem almost futuristic. A fleet of taxis in Freiburg, Germany, is using Diesel-Bi, a vegetable oil-based diesel fuel supplied by Milan-based Novamont, a Ferruzzi-Montedison subsidiary, according to Chemical Engineering Progress. Diesel-Bi consists of proprietary blends of diesel and esters of soybean, rapeseed and sunflower oils.

Approximately 30 Mercedes-Benz cabs are equipped with catalytic converters. The German Federation of Taxi Drivers' goal is to fuel 40,000 taxis throughout Germany with the fuel by 1995. - Chemical Engineering Progress, May 1992.
