School Vending Requirements Slated in Wisconsin

Dairy Foods, Jan, 2002

MADISON, Wis.--School districts that enter exclusive agreements with soda companies will be required to offer milk as an alternative under legislation being developed in the dairy state.

"Obviously milk is important to kids. If we offer them the option, I think they'll take it," said state Rep. Joe Plouff. He and a state senate counter-part hoped to have hearings on the bill before the Legislature reconvenes this month.

While some school districts have entered into contracts with companies such as Coca-Cola and received generous cash donations, more and more districts are offering vending machines that feature flavored milks. The Madison School District dropped its exclusive contract with Coca-Cola last year and voluntarily relinquished the $100,000 the soda company had offered to pay the district.
