Dairy Foods, April, 2008
California dairy farmers have temporarily won a battle to keep a state law setting new, stricter bacteria limits on raw milk producers from being enforced.
Kerman-based Organic Pastures Dairy Co. and another raw milk producer, Claravale Farms Inc. in San Benito County, sued the state, saying the standards could outlaw some of their preferred products.
Late last month, a San Benito County judge issued a temporary restraining order barring the state from enforcing a law that sets a 10 coliform-per-milliliter standard.
Also, two Organic Pastures employees were questioned by agents from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The two workers were subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury this month.
