Catching the lucrative teenage fancy with sparkle, shimmer and shine

Drug Store News, August 14, 2000 by Liz Parks

In the United States, Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens are promoting the collection; Kmart and Eckerd are testing it. ShopKo carries it in all 120 of its stores, and tests are pending with Meijer's and J.C. Penney.

President Gary Schofled said that Caboodles, which now is in approximately 3,000 stores, should be in 5,000 stores by the end of this year.

This year, the collection will expand to include a full line of colorful fragranced bath and body products, including shampoos, body mists, face cleansers, candles and crystal bath grains. There are six fragrances and six colors in the collection. Price points range from $2.99 to $3.99.

The Caboodles division of Plano Molding Co., based in Plano, Ill., also is introducing its newest collection of cosmetic fashion organizers. This year's collection--in textures of wood and bamboo, as well as in colorful plastic shapes--is targeted to appeal to fashion-conscious teens.

Caboodles also has several colorful and easy-to-assemble wall and floor stand displays that retailers can use to create a permanent home for the brand.

Going to Townley

New York-based Townley, which continues to gain both expanded promotional and in-line distribution, currently is working with several drug chains on creating teen/pre-teen shops in the form of four-sided island displays. Townley would be one of four brands merchandised in the teen/pre-teen shops. Depending on the chain, some of the other brands in consideration for display are Caboodles, Bonne Bell and Jane.

Townley also introduced several new youth collections at Marketplace, including a licensed collection called Flux Deluxe. The collection features fruit-scented lip, nail, body and hair coloring cosmetics in shades represented by characters with names like Pussycat, Kitty and Wild Ginger, all licensed from Santoro Licensing of London. Townley also introduced Atomic Babes, which features cosmetics associated with characters with names like Fluffy and Funky, also licensed from Santoro. The suggested retails are $2.99.

Townely also introduced some imaginative promotional items, including a lip glitter gloss pen.

From pre-teens to 20-somethings

Port Washington, N.Y.-based Kiss Products introduced several promotional collections for pre-teens, including Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse pre-decorated nail kits, nail art and jewelry, sculpted bottles of nail color, and nail files. It also introduced Mickey Mouse Body Art and Halloween Body Art for the fall.

Farmingdale, N.Y.-based Montaz showed off a number of new promotional collections for its Traffic Jam collection targeted to teen girls. The new promotions include a six-shade collection of nail art pens and polishes; a three-dimensional collection of lipsticks, nail paints, pencils and face and body blush; a six-shade collection of sparkling Gloss & Go Lip Gloss rings; and a 10-shade collection of eye shadows and lip gloss packaged in a compact disc like container.

Montaz also has a new permanent display presentation for Traffic Jam.

Los Angeles, Calif.-based Jordana, manufacturers of mid-priced lip, nail and eye color cosmetics, introduced several color promotions targeted to teens and 20-somethings. Among the new collections were lip swirls and nail color in eye-catching, see-through packages and a spinner rack display of lip gloss swirls, glitter nails, flavored lip glitter gloss and an innovative new formulation of what Jordana calls "tie-dye" lip gloss. Retails are in the $2.99 range.
