Ranbaxy to produce generic Ativan

Drug Store News, Oct 8, 2001

Ranbaxy Pharmaceucticals received FDA approval to produce lorazepam tablets USP, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg, the therapeutic equivalent to Wyeth-Ayerst branded anxiety drug Ativan. It is used to treat anxiety disorders and relieve short term anxiety symptoms associated with depression. While there are several generic versions of the drug available, Rambaxy spokesman Charles Caprariello said the company's ability to produce the components of the drug without outside suppliers gives it a competitive edge.

Lorazepam from other companies has weathered shortages, lawsuits and recalls in the past.
