The Food and Drug Administration has granted final approval for Sun Pharmaceutical's application to market a generic version of Novartis' Exelon. The drug, rivastgmine tartrate, is used to treat mild to moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The generic will be available in all four strengths, and the company will share a 180-day exclusivity for the drug, which had annual sales of about $525 million in 2006.
The company also has received a contract from Wyeth that states the company will not sue it over the company's application for a generic form of Wyeth's drug, Effexor XR capsules. The generic, venlafaxine extended-release tablets, will be available in three strengths: 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg. The drug is an antidepressant. The three strengths of Effexor XR had sales of $2.6 billion for the 12 months ended Aug. 31, according to Wolters-Kluwer Health.
