Homedics recently launched its BP300, a blood-pressure monitor employing both the auscultatory method and oscillometric method of measuring blood pressure, through the company's exclusive Digital Korotkoff technology, making the monitor more "like the one the doctor uses in his office." Drug Store News caught up with Tom Finnegan, general manager for Homedics, for more insight on the product launch.
Drug Store News: What is the significance of employing the Korotkoff method, or the method the doctor's office uses, to measure blood pressure versus the traditional oscillometric method used in home-based monitors?
Tom Finnegan: Today's monitors measure blood pressure using the oscillometric pressure method. DK technology uses both auscultatory sound and oscillometric methods, making it the only home monitor that truly measures like a doctor. With a microphone built into the arm cuff, DK technology actually listens during a reading, similar to a doctor using a stethoscope.
DrSN: How is Homedics getting the word out to consumers regarding this significance?
Finnegan: Homedics' ... retail packaging and in-store merchandising educate consumers on the benefits of DK technology. Additionally, Homedics is promoting the product on the air with radio personalities this fall, including Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Charles Osgood, Dr. Laura and others.
Homedics monitors have been awarded the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, which will appear on packaging starting in 2008. The Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval is one of the most influential consumer emblems in the market today.
