CHPA, NIH release review

Drug Store News, Feb 19, 2001 by Annette Scalise

WASHINGTON -- The "Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research" is available, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association announced.

The publication is a joint effort between CHPA and the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements, compiled for the purpose of illustrating the strides to advance the science behind dietary supplements through quality research, CHPA executives said.

CHPA and NIH contacted 35 peer-reviewed clinical journal editors seeking nominations for original research papers that appeared in their respective journals in 1999. More than 200 articles were received and then forwarded to leading scientists to identify the top 25 studies, CHPA executives said.

The papers included leading research in the areas of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, as well as fats and fatty acids, minerals, botanicals and androstenedione, fiber and melatonin.

"Not only does it provide the hardworking investigators in the field the credit and recognition they deserve," said CHPA president Michael Maves, "it also serves as an educational tool for healthcare professionals and practitioners, members of the media and government officials."
