The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians last month released new guidelines for treating middle ear infection, urging doctors to use great care before prescribing antibiotics. The new guidelines noted that about 8-in-10 children with ear infections get better with no antibiotics at all.
Parents still should remedy the pain associated with the infection. "Make the child comfortable with pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen," said Ted Ganiats, co-chair of the guideline panel.
