Fashion, licenses drive hair accessories

"We increased our offerings in the premium brush segment," Mackey said. "The ceiling had been $1.99, but consumers have shown a willingness to pay up to $3.99 for salon-quality brushes. One new line is bulk brushes that hang in a pegged section by a hole in the handle. "The brushes combine salon quality with a great value since there's no packaging expense," Mackey said. Wilhold's Sport Brush Collection is another new line of five SKUs that feature a rubber grip and strong color. The half blister packaging allows consumers to feel the brush handle.

Wilhold has also updated the color schemes for its brushes, combs and mirrors. "People like basic colors but we can experiment with finishes, such as matte and pearlized looks," Mackey said. "We've added a pearl linen color that's a neutral between beige and gray."

Goody has updated the packaging on its brush line with a new Matrix system. A packaging icon system helps consumers make more informed choices about which brush to use to achieve certain styles.
