NovAtel's SCS granted FCC type acceptance

Mobile Phone News, Sept 12, 1991

Alberta, Canada-based, NovAtel Communications Inc. has received type acceptance from the FCC and certification from the Canadian Department of Communications (DOC) for its Supplementary Cellular System (SCS). The type acceptance was granted July 23. Previously, NovAtel received notice from the FCC to either file for type acceptance or loose the experimental licenses for the SCS. NovAtel's SCS is a lightweight, compact unit (suitcase-sized) which functions as a stand-alone cellular system. It is capable of taking cellular service anywhere, with portability, reduced output power and the convenient-direct connection of three telephone lines.

The SCS is being field tested by a regional Bell operating company and several other telecommunications companies. Six prototype units currently are operating with experimental licenses in rural markets.

On an unrelated issue, NovAtel successfully has field tested its prototype, dual-mode, subscriber equipment and Ericsson's digital base station in Stockholm, Sweden. The 15 field test scenarios were completed and verified by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA).
