Ad group derides Miller "catfight" ad

Modern Brewery Age, April 14, 2003

The "catfight" commercial for Miller Lite beer, which depicts a male fantasy of two women wrestling, has received the Grand Ugly Award at the sixth annual presentation of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly Awards, sponsored by the Advertising Women of New York.

The AWNY said its awards are intended to encourage marketers and agencies to portray women in advertising in ways that are "positive and not stereotypical."

The Grand Ugly award seems to indicate an advertiser's failure to meet that standard. The spot, called "Catfight," was created by the Chicago office of Ogilvy & Mather, part of the WPP Group, for Miller Lite, sold by SABMiller. "Catfight" was in good company, however. A Coors Light ad also received an Ugly Award.
