Missouri law to requrie posted alcohol warnings - Brief Article

Modern Brewery Age, July 9, 2001

Associated Press--Missouri businesses that sell liquor will have to post warnings that alcohol can cause birth defects, under legislation signed into law by Gob. Bob Holden.

The measure, taking effect Aug. 28, was one of six signed by Holden during a brief trip to Kansas City -- home of the alcohol bill's sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Mary Groves Bland. The other measures all affected Kansas City specifically.

Under the new law, all businesses licensed to sell or serve alcohol will have to give "conspicuous" display to signs stating the following message: "WARNING: Drinking alcoholic beverages during pregnancy may cause birth defects."

Violations of the law would be reported to the state but would not result in a criminal penalty.
