Modern Brewery Age, July 11, 2005

The Siebel Institute of Technology and World Brewing Academy have announced that Klaus D. Zastrow, D.Agr.Sc, will be a special Guest Lecturer during this year's World Brewing Academy International Diploma in Brewing Technology program.

Dr. Zastrow is well-known to American brewers as a top brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch from the 1970s to the early 1990s. He left Anheuser-Busch in 1993 and went to work for the Siebel Institute. He is now taking a break from his busy retirement schedule to provide instruction on hops and hop products during the Raw Materials & Wort Production module (Sep. 12--23, 2005) of the WBA Diploma program (Sep. 12--Dec. 2, 2005) and WBA Associate program (Sep. 12--Oct. 21, 2005).

Dr. Klaus D. Zastrow started his brewing career in 1949 in Germany, where he served as an apprentice at the Engelhardt Brauerei in Berlin, Germany. Following his graduation as Journeyman Brewer and Maltster he worked in several breweries and malthouses in Germany and Switzerland, including Spaten Brauerei, Munich and Kronenburg Brauerei, Dortmund. He then studied brewing technology at Technical University Berlin graduating in 1956 as Certified Brewery Engineer. Continuing with post-graduate work, he served as head assistant to Professors Kolbach and Kraua at the University's Institute for Brewing Technology.

In 1970 Dr. Zastrow came to the United States to join Anheuser-Busch where he was named Vice President Brewing Technical Services in 1978. In this position, being head of the company's Technical Center, his responsibilities included applied brewing research, product development, liaison concerning international, government and legal affairs, as well as plant protection for raw materials, in particular hops.

In 1993, after 24 years with Anheuser-Busch, Dr. Zastrow took part in an early retirement program, and in 1994 he joined the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago where he was one of the institute's most popular instructors.
